If you’ve just scheduled your first bikini wax, there are many things you’ll need to do to get prepared.

There are so many reasons to give up your razor in favor of wax, and in our last blog, we touched on a few of those reasons. However, the one big benefit of shaving is that you can do it in the privacy and comfort of your own home. Plus, you’ve been shaving for your entire life, and you know how to do so safely. Waxing, on the other hand, can be scary if you’ve never had it done before. But don’t fret. There are lots of things you can do before your first bikini wax appointment to make it more successful and less painful.

#1. Grow your hair out

While you can shave no matter what length your hair is, when it comes to waxing, you want it to be just the right length. If your hair is too short, it can make it difficult for the wax to grab onto, but if it’s too long, it can also make it difficult to grab onto well enough to fully pull the follicle out. Don’t shave for a week or two leading up to your appointment, but if the hair is getting too long or out of control, consider trimming it up a bit before your appointment. Ideally, the hair should be between ⅛ and ¼ an inch long.

#2. Exfoliate

Waxing is not as painful as many people believe, but that doesn’t mean that it’s painless. Luckily though, one big thing you can do to reduce the pain and improve the effectiveness of your bikini wax is to exfoliate before your appointment — either the night before or the morning of. Exfoliating will help to remove any dead skin cells that may be in the area, making it easier for the wax to grab onto the actual hair instead of just skin cells.

#3. Don’t over moisturize

Exfoliating can dry out your skin, so you may be tempted to moisture after you exfoliate. If you exfoliate the night before you wax, use a small amount of oil-free moisturizer on the area. However, if you choose to exfoliate the morning of your appointment, you might want to moisturize later on in the day, because the moisturizer will make it difficult for the wax to grab onto your hair. Whatever you do, make sure that you moisturize with an oil-free lotion, as the oil makes it nearly impossible for the wax to get a good grip on the hair.

These are just a few things that you can do to prepare for your first body waxing adventure, and in our next blog, we’ll go over a few more.
