At Inner Beauty Concepts’ med spa, we offer intense pulsed light (IPL) hair removal treatments to permanently remove unwanted hair. You might be asking, though, “What’s the difference between IPL and laser hair removal?” They’re similar in a lot of ways, like how they don’t remove hair immediately, rather your hair falls out over time as the follicles and roots die; and how you’ll probably have to go back for a few more sessions to remove hair as the follicles will be in different stages of their growth cycle.
Beyond that, the technology and process varies between IPL and laser hair removal. At our med spa, we offer IPL hair removal because we want to provide you with a safe and effective solution for permanently removing unwanted hair.
IPL Technology For Hair Removal
IPL is an innovative technology because it can actually be used to treat a variety of skin conditions. At Inner Beauty Concepts we use it for hair removal because the broad-spectrum, high-intensity light targets and destroys the melanin in the hair follicle and root. It emits light at a variety of wavelengths and can be adjusted depending on the patient, but the wavelength is shorter than what a laser emits. It also covers larger patches of hair than laser hair removal devices.
Since IPL targets melanin and uses shorter wavelengths, it works best on darker, thicker hair because it will absorb the light better. It is not as concentrated as laser hair removal either, so you may need more sessions than you would for laser hair removal.
Laser Hair Removal
Instead of varying wavelengths that IPL uses, laser hair removal only uses one, longer wavelength that is more precise. It can go deeper than IPL to kill the base of the hair follicle. However, because of this more precise wavelength, it can only target smaller areas at a time. For this reason, it is recommended for smaller areas of hair like the face and bikini line. Lasers target the pigment of the hair, so it will work better on those with darker skin tones.
Laser hair removal is more expensive than IPL because it uses a laser instead of just light. It is likely that you will have to return for more sessions too because even a laser can’t destroy hair that is not in the active part of their growth cycle.
The Pros And Cons
When it comes to IPL, it’s a great option for those who have dark, thicker hair and light to medium skin tones. Treatment works quickly to destroy the root of the hair and covers larger areas. It is very precise and affects the just the hair and not the skin. For this reason it can be a more comfortable treatment option with less irritation and side effects afterward. It is also less expensive than laser hair removal. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work as well on lighter, thinner hair. It might also require more sessions to remove all the hair because of the shorter wavelength.
Laser hair removal is incredibly precise and targets hair with deeper wavelengths. It is also quick and is able to permanently remove more hair in less sessions than IPL. It’s more suitable for those with darker skin tones, however, it is also not ideal for those with lighter, thinner hair. You might need less sessions when you use laser hair removal, but it is much more costly. There are also more intense side effects, like irritated skin and the feeling of having a sunburn.
