Research About Pregnancy Massage

There has been much research on the subject of prenatal and postpartum massage as a treatment to help depression and anxiety in women who are pregnant or who recently gave birth. One of the most highly referenced studies on the subject, “Pregnancy and Labor Massage,” originally published by Tiffany Field in October of 1997. In this study 26 pregnant women were assigned to receive massage therapy for two twenty minute sessions per week for five weeks. A second group was simply assigned to relaxation sessions twice per week where they could meditate or just take time to sit and relax. 

At the end of this study, only the women who were assigned to receive prenatal massages reported reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression. In the results, these women reported reduced anxiety, better sleep, improved mood, and less back pain than at the start of the trial. In addition to the women reporting these results in questionnaires, urine samples reported that urinary stress hormones (norepinephrine) actually decreased for this group. This group even showed fewer complications during labor and less prematurity in the infants that were born.

    • Morning Sickness – If you are still in the first trimester or are still experiencing morning sickness, massage can sometimes increase these symptoms.

    • Varicose Veins – Let your massage therapist know if you have varicose veins so that they can avoid massaging directly on top of them which can cause pain.
    • Gestational Diabetes – Experts advise that blood sugar levels must be under control before receiving massage treatments.
    • Edema or Preeclampsia – If you are experiencing edema or preeclampsia, please talk to your doctor before scheduling a massage.
    • Deep Vein Thrombosis – Please postpone prenatal massages until this has been resolved.
    • Placenta Complications – If you have any complications with your placenta such as previa, accreta, abruption, or other issues, please consult with your doctor before scheduling a massage.
